August 14 The Day the World Came to Town by Jum Defede (Carol Main)
Gander, Newfoundland, used to be the airport where airplanes refueled between Europe and the United States- that is until the advent of passenger jets. When US airspace was closed on September 11, 2001, 250 planes, with 6,595 passengers and crew onboard, landed in Gander, whose population is less than 10,000. The author tells the story of how the people of Gander rose to the challenge with warmth and compassion. It is a story of the triumph of the human spirit in the face of tragedy.
