Grace Book Groups
In-Person Book Group

Join us for in Person book discussions to begin with a discussion of Geraldine Brooks’ Horse in Nolt Auditorium at Grace during the first of monthly gatherings on Mondays starting on February 26 from 1:30 PM to about 3 PM.
In the mid 19th century, those who could afford it hired portrait painters to create images of their family members and racehorse owners sometimes extended this practice to their favorite thoroughbreds. Almost none of these portraits show the slaves who cared for those horses, but after reading a magazine article from the 1850’s about a painting of Lexington and his groom, Geraldine Brooks created this story of the actual horse whose famous portrait by Thomas J. Scott which actually resides in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and whose
rearticulated skeleton, after being displayed in front of the Smithsonian Castle before languishing in the museum’s storage area for years, has been repatriated to the Museum of the Horse in Lexington, KY. The contemporary subplot about a black art history graduate student and an osteologist at the Smithsonian shows that racism in America unfortunately continues. Join other readers in person on Monday, February 26 at 1:30 PM to talk together about this book. Future books currently planned to be discussed by this new group at Grace will include Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult on March 25, A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell on April 22, and The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin on May 27. Fun fact: stop watches were created to enable fans of Lexington to time his races.
Books, Coffee, Conversation
The Books, Coffee, and Conversation group met last Tuesday to discuss the romance books we read for February. You can find the list of what we read here.
The themes/topics/genres for the next few months are:
March—a book set in Ireland/by an Irish author, by an Irish-American author, a book about Irish-Americans
April— one word titles
May—the first book in a series you haven’t read before
June— a book by an author with your initials…for example Angie Rabbe could read a book by Ava Reid.
If you need help finding books please reach out to Angie or Brenda, your local library, or local bookstore. If you would like to join our group please let Brenda or Angie know so we can add you to the email list.
