In-Person Book Group

Monday, June 24th at 1:30 PM in Nolt Auditorium
All are welcome to join in a discussion of True Biz, a novel by Sara Novic. True Biz is the Free Library of Philadelphia’s 2024 One Book/One
Philadelphia selection. Sara Novic is a young deaf writer, translator, creative writing professor, and advocate for the deaf community.
True Biz means “for real” or “real talk” in American Sign Language (ASL). The
author “keeps it real” for her main characters Charlie and Austin and their headmistress February (a Child Of Deaf Adults) at River Valley School for the Deaf. The lives of these characters intertwine, as they face challenges, struggle for human connection, and look for meaning as members of a
diverse deaf community.
True Biz can be found at the Lancaster County Library or on Amazon as a Kindle or hardcover book. If you have any questions, please contact
Barbara Andersen, discussion leader for True Biz.

Lower Susquehanna Synod Assembly
This past weekend members of the Lower Susquehanna Synod met at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in York, PA.
- We elected voting members for next year’s church wide assembly in Phoenix, AZ.
- We elected new members of Synod Council and nominated our Synod’s candidates for church wide council.
- We re-elected Jennifer Lau as Synod VP.
- We voted to raise the base pay for first call pastors, both with and without a parsonage.
- After a brief debate regarding the Synod’s $90,000 deficit in the budget, we voted to continue
- financially supporting United Lutheran Seminary. We did not increase the amount budgeted for camp and campus ministry.
- We voted to mandate an LGBT+ competency training for all rostered leaders to be completed every two years.
- We passed an amendment regarding the election process for Bishop. This was old business from last year’s assembly. Instead of the Synod sharing all of the reasons why conferences lifted up rostered leaders as candidates for Bishop, the Synod will be sharing one of the reasons that will be selected by the candidate.
There was a lot of discussion about next year’s assembly at which we will be electing a new bishop. A very important note regarding registration for next year’s assembly—voting members and rostered leaders must be registered by 12/31/24. There will be a number of listening sessions and an extra conference assembly so that there is plenty of time to nominate candidates for Bishop and for us as a synod to decide what we want in our next bishop. The dates for next year’s assembly are June 5-7 (Thursday evening and all day Friday and Saturday). All day’s are in-person at St. Matthew’s York. Please let Pastor Verkouw know if you are interested in attending. You can also talk to Angie Rabbe, who has been one of our voting members for the past few years, if you have any questions about what it’s like to attend a synod assembly.
