ELCA Youth Gathering

Mission of the ELCA Youth Gathering: “Through days spent in interactive learning, worship, Bible study, service and fellowship, young people grow in faith and are challenged and inspired to live their faith in their daily lives.”

We are so incredibly grateful for the support of our congregational family who made our trip to the ELCA’s Youth Gathering in New Orleans possible. For some of our youth this was their first time flying, first time being in New Orleans, and for all it was their first time at the Gathering. During our time in New Orleans we experienced many new things including but not limited to: joining 14,000 other youth in the Smoothie King Center for Mass Gathering each evening, completing a service project at Larry Gilbert Stadium, riding down the Mississippi River on the steamboat Natchez, and trying a variety of New Orleans cuisine.
These experiences helped our youth to learn new things about themselves:
“I learned that I am a person who loves experiencing new things. I love to travel, try new foods, and meet new people and I think this trip really helped me realize how much I enjoy going on new adventures.” – Kaylee
“I learned that I really enjoyed traveling to new places. I also learned that my actions can have a positive impact on a community in need. Especially through helping clean and paint a community ballpark, which is a space that can bring people together.” – Mark
“I learned that I can be okay far away from my family and friends and being in a new place isn’t always scary. I also learned that I enjoy learning stuff about other churches and how they do their services differently from our services.” – Chloe
“Something I learned about myself is that I should give things a try before I complain, because I never know if I’m going to enjoy it until I try.” – Bailey

Our youth also developed their relationship with God and the larger church:
“I got to see how many other youth members came to worship. There were 14,000 different people there and it was so amazing to see them all in one place. It really shows the extent of the Lutheran church and how many people it reaches.” – Mark
This trip showed me that the church is a safe space to express yourself and the people within it are similar to your family because they are all there to offer support and show kindness.” – Kaylee
This trip impacted my relationship with God because I learned that there are more ways to have a connection with God than just being at church.” – Bailey
“It just meant a lot to be surrounded by other youth singing together. I learned more about my faith and relationship with God.” – Ella
“The community base and togetherness made it feel like a home away from home. It opened my eyes to different impacts God has had on people.” – Sanya
“I feel like this trip really brought me closer to God by being able to praise him and spread his word at such an impactful level. I also felt a sense of relief and care from God on this trip that was different from what I had felt before.” – Sebastian
We had an amazing time and we can’t wait to share more about our experiences with all of you.

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF INGATHERING 2024

Thank you to everyone who donated toward School Kits and Personal Care Kits. We were able to make 95 School Kits and 178 Personal Care Kits. The Quilt and Kit ministry is the longest running program of LWR, born in 1945 – the same year LWR began. Over these 80 years, the ministry has grown considerably, which means they recently have been able to expand to include the U.S. A minimum of 10 truckloads of quilts and kits will be sent soon to affected areas in Florida and the Carolinas. LWR works with local partners like Lutheran Services of the Carolinas. Bottled water and other urgently requested items are also being sent as well as cash grants to provide food, essential supplies and temporary housing.

Please consider donating to the LWR shipping fund. LWR spends around 1.9 million to operate this program, distributing about 18 million worth of quilts and kits each year. They appreciate donations to this fund. You can put your check or cash in an envelope marked “LWR Shipping Fund.” Thank you so much!
