January 2025 – Conclave by Robert Harris

“The pope is dead. Behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, one hundred and eighteen cardinals from all over the globe will gather to cast their votes in the world’s most secretive election. They are holy men. But they are not immune to the human temptations of power and glory. And they are not above the tribalism and factionalism that consumes humanity. When all is said and done, one of them will become the most powerful spiritual figure on Earth.” From Amazon

In January, Jean Young will lead our discussion on the 27th from 1:30 to 3:30 in the Nolt Auditorium.  Now a major motion picture!

February 2025 – Master, Slave, Husband, Wife by
Ilyon Woo

“A rich narrative of the Crafts, an enslaved couple who escaped from Georgia in 1848, with light-skinned Ellen disguised as a disabled white gentleman and William as her manservant, exploiting assumptions about race, class, and disability to hide in public on their journey to the North, where they became famous abolitionists while evading bounty hunters.” —The Pulitzer Prizes

We will meet on February 24th from 1:30 to 3:30 in the Nolt Auditorium.  This discussion will be led by Barbara Andersen.

SoulMates Volunteer Opportunities

Hello Volunteers,

Happy New Year! I’m reaching out today to share that our next SoulMates Teen Volunteer Program training will be taking place on Saturday, January 18th at the Hospice & Community Care administrative office in Lancaster. The SoulMates program was the brainchild of Alexandra Weitzel, a local 18-year old with terminal cancer who wished to leave a legacy behind by creating a program where young adults her age could be a “soulmate” to hospice patients going through a similar journey.

We are currently recruiting student volunteers from local/regional high schools and youth serving organizations in Lancaster County to participate in the SoulMates Teen Volunteer Program. SoulMates volunteers can serve in a variety of capacities, from providing companionship to patients at the Bob Fryer and Family Inpatient Center in Mount Joy, to helping to support our many community and fundraising special events. Teen volunteers will gain valuable personal and professional skills through this unique and meaningful volunteer service experience, and this opportunity can also help fulfill school service-learning or community service requirements. For young adults especially interested in pursuing careers in healthcare or social work, the SoulMates volunteer program is a tremendous opportunity for hands-on experience.

We’re hoping you can help us promote this opportunity by sharing information about the SoulMates Teen Volunteer program with your own personal and professional networks. To become a SoulMates Teen Volunteer, interested applicants must be 15-18 years old (although we will consider applicants who are currently 14 years old but turning 15 within the next 6-months). I’ve attached a SoulMates flyer which contains a QR code which will take interested applicants directly to our website and the SoulMates volunteer application.

For more information on the SoulMates Teen volunteer program, please visit https://www.hospiceandcommunitycare.org/soulmates/ or contact Jen Horan at (717) 735-2466 or jhoran@hospicecommunity.org.

Thank you for helping us spread the word about this exciting opportunity for local young adults!
