Souper Bowl Sunday

As the country celebrates a favorite past time on Super Bowl Sunday, we will once again take the
opportunity to help those in need by participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring.

On Sunday, February 9th we will be collecting items for the Community Meals offered right here at Grace Church.  For the Wednesday evening meals, our team can always use spaghetti sauce, containers of powdered coffee creamer, individual cans of Chunky soup or ravioli, and packages of dinner rolls (which can be frozen if not used within a few days).

In addition, we have been partnering with the Parish Resource Center for take-out meals provided multiple times per week, for which the following items are needed:  snacks in individual bags (chips, pretzels, etc.), dessert or candy in individual servings, granola bars, and individual bags or nuts or trail mix.

If grocery shopping is not your thing, we will also encourage folks to purchase gift cards through our Grocery Card Project, which can be used to purchase items for the above-mentioned meals or distributed to folks in need by Pastor Verkouw at his discretion.

And certainly, feel free to show your support of your favorite team by wearing your favorite team’s jersey or colors.

Great Themes of the Bible”

February at Grace will be looking at the 4 Main Themes of the Bible.

Here is a description from the authors of this bible study, The Thoughtful Christian group: “The Bible is richly diverse, sixty-six “books” written over eleven hundred years by prophets, poets, historians, sages, farmers,

soldiers, prisoners, storytellers, theologians, and letter writers.  Some expressed strong faith, others grave doubt.  Aggregated into a unit, what is the whole book saying?

I suggest four things. First, God is with us; we are not fugitives wandering the earth bereft of larger meaning. Second, God is most concerned not with kings and human power but with “the least of these my brothers and sisters.”  Third, God loves us; at the center of the creation is a heart of compassion.  And fourth, God is always bigger than we think; our minds are repeatedly too small to fathom the enormity of God’s mind and heart. To keep in mind the Bible’s central messages is highly important.  Isolated texts, read by themselves, can say things that vastly contradict the whole.  Smaller interpretations always need to be judged in the context of the larger messages.”

Silver and Gold Discovery Class – coming this Lent

Make new friends but keep the old – one is silver and the other gold (sing it!) Adult Sunday School during this upcoming Lent will be a Silver and Gold Discovery class.

The class will lead us to discover more about the new faces at Grace, about Grace church, about how we express being Lutheran Christians in this place and how we can be a better light to those around us in this world.  Why not make this part of your Lenten Journey?

Dates: Sundays from March 9th to April 13th
Time: 9am- 10:15am

Thank You

Thanks to all of our Grace friends for prayers, cards and  calls! They were appreciated as Scott’s
