Nicene Creed—1700 Years Later

2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed – which many have considered to be the core profession of the Christian faith, and which is spoken in churches across the world.   To honor this milestone, I am planning to share articles in the Grace News through this year based on questions I, as a layperson, have about it, and answers I, as a layperson, can find.  This first answer came from Grok (an AI app).  I’d welcome questions and/or answers from you all as well.

My first question is Why?

Why was the Nicene Creed written?

The Nicene Creed (first version) was written in 325 CE during the First Council of Nicaea to address theological disputes, particularly the Arian controversy, which questioned the divinity of Jesus Christ. Convened by Emperor Constantine, the council aimed to unify Christian doctrine across the Roman Empire. The creed established a clear statement of faith, affirming that Jesus is “of the same substance” (homoousios) as God the Father, countering Arianism’s claim that Jesus was a created being. It also sought to standardize core Christian beliefs, ensuring doctrinal consistency and combating heresies, while promoting unity within the early Church.

I realize that there are words in this answer that need explanation, and I will try to address them in future articles.  Do let me know if there is something you want me to include.
