Liturgy and Music in the 21st Century Church—Where are we going?
Please join Dr. David McConnell, Director of Music at 9:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall for a discussion of music and liturgy in today’s church: Why we do what we do? What do we do well and what needs improvement? Can our music and liturgy be both traditional and contemporary? The issue of music in worship, especially the type and style, is an especially divisive subject – but we will set out to bridges those differing ideas into a healthy diverse whole. Class begins November 3.

Grace Your Table cookbook!
Help our youth get to Minneapolis for the ELCA Youth Gathering in 2021!
We will be compiling a Grace Church cookbook, “Grace Your Table,” as a fundraiser for our youth. The book will feature recipes from our ESL students, artwork from our youngest members, and recipes, photos, and stories from our congregation! Cost per book is $15. We need recipes, photos, and stories! Do you have photos or stories from meals at Grace? We would love to include them in our book! The above can be emailed to our Assistant Program Director Angie Smith at email@example.com or be placed in the recipe boxes in the St. Peter Chapel and the Narthex. All recipes are due to the church office by November 20, 2019. Please contact Angie with any questions, firstname.lastname@example.org or 717-397-2748.
Young Adults in Global Mission
“The ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission program invites ELCA young adults ages 21-29 into a transformative, year-long journey in international service. As they offer themselves in service, ELCA young adults are shaped by the witness of our global neighbors. They share in the journeys of companion churches and organizations in one of nine countries around the world.”
On October 16, Kath and I had breakfast with Calla Gilson who recently returned from a year in Palestine. Calla shared stories of life in Palestine and we talked about the challenges facing the Palestinian people. Calla and I were also able to talk about how as young adults in our denomination we are answering our calls. She encouraged us to share the work that YAGM is doing with our congregation.
The ELCA supports missions in nine locations Argentina and Uruguay; Australia; Central Europe; Jerusalem and the West Bank; Mexico; Rwanda; Senegal; and the United Kingdom. The ELCA sponsors 2/3 of the cost and the missionaries are encouraged to raise the rest. However, if the missionaries cannot raise $5000 the ELCA will cover the remaining expenses. We are the only denomination that will send our missionaries regardless of how much money they raise.
“Young adults serve in the spirit of accompaniment, walking alongside global companions in a manner that practices mutuality, interdependence and solidarity. Areas of service include, but are not limited to, health and development, congregational ministry, human rights, education, homelessness, addiction recovery, women’s issues and children and youth. All site placements provide opportunities for young adults to confront issues of wealth and poverty, racial privilege, economic disparity and globalization, all through the lens of faith.”
